Lavender Dream
Lavender, cultivated since Roman times to scent baths and linen, appeared in Provence in the Middle Ages thanks to its olfactory and medicinal virtues. In the 19th century, its cultivation intensified, notably to supply the perfumeries of Grasse with high-quality essential oil, used in the creation of precious elixirs.
The Lavender Route of the Luberon will delight lovers of colors and fragrances. Discover peaceful villages, medieval castles, abbeys, vineyards, the famous ochres of Roussillon and breathtaking landscapes. Immerse yourself in the world of lavender by visiting fields, distilleries and museums, where you will discover the secrets behind the production of essential oils. The lavender fields spread out in Sault, Bonnieux, Gordes, Roussillon, Oppède, and on the Claparade plateau. Peak season runs from late June until the grape harvest festival on August 15.

The ’Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey, located near Gordes, at the foot of the Luberon massif, represents the quintessence of Cistercian architecture. Built in the 12th century, it reached its peak in the 13th and 19th centuries. It owned mills, herds, a hospital in Arles, and houses in Marseille, Carpentras and Cavaillon. Still run by Cistercian brothers, the visit reveals the pure lines of its church, cloister, dormitory, refectory, and much more.
The ’Montmajour Abbey, founded in the 10th century by Benedictine monks and located on a hill near Arles, houses pre-Romanesque and Romanesque buildings. Among the original remains is the semi-troglodyte St. Peter's chapel, built under a rock. The Romanesque parts dating from the 12th and 13th centuries include the abbey church, the monastic buildings and an exceptional cloister, adorned with statues, bas-reliefs and columns with 48 sculpted capitals. The 14th-century keep adds a military touch, while an 18th-century monastery lends a neoclassical style.
